The fire ratings of blown wool changes based on the material. Glass and rock wools are nonflammable, rated as A1. Cellulose wool is produced from recyclable wood fibers, mostly from newspapers, and is therefore flammable. However, chemicals are added into the pulp which creates a smoldering instead of a proper flame. These chemicals make the molding process slower as well. Cellulose wool has a smoldering speed of about 1mm to 2mm per minute.
Sound insulation properties
Blowing wool has approximately the same sound insulation performance as plate-like mineral wool.
Compared to mineral wool, pulp wool collects a lot of moisture from the air. If water reaches the wool, pulp wool absorbs up to ten times the amount of mineral wool. In dehumidifying structures, the wool dries in the direction of the heat flow, whereas in wall structures it dries upwards.
The drying time depends on how much water is bound to the wool. Cellulose wool loses its thickness when wet and does not recover when the wool dries. In mineral wools, their thickness is generally not affected by moisture. After drying, all wools operate at a U-value corresponding to their thickness. The U-value (heat transfer coefficient) describes the thermal insulation capacity of the various building components. The lower the U-value, the better the thermal insulation capacity.
The density of blowing wool varies from material to material, glass wool is the lightest and rock wool the heaviest. Density is affected by, among other things, adjustments to the mounting machine, blowing wool and characteristics of the site to be blown into.
